The Instagram Socialmatic Camera Concept Would Bring The Photo Sharing App To Real Life

instagram-socialmatic-camera-concept-01Once upon a time a company pioneered simple photo sharing. By allowing consumers to easily take and share pictures, photography became a part of everyday life. Now, several generations removed, Polaroid is essentially an empty shell of the once iconic brand it used to be. The Instagram Socialmatic Camera is just a concept currently, but it attempts to revive the Polaroid movement with a little help from every hipster’s favorite mobile app, Instagram.

March 31 is World Backup Day 2011

World Backup Day 2011

Those benevolent armchair philanthropist Redditors are at it again! Four days ago a ‘self’ post extolling the potential virtues of a Backup Day exploded with 2500 upvotes and 1000 comments — and now World Backup Day 2011 is actually happening.

On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you’ve ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you’ll know that it’s a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you’ve never backed up your important files — or if you only back up sporadically — do it on World Backup Day!

It’s not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there’s always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don’t forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools — $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.

For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.

Who’s Afraid of a Big Bad Hacking Story?

It’s been a cheerily good spring for FOSS fans here in the Linux blogosphere, so we may perhaps be forgiven for our utter shock and disbelief at the affront recently committed against us by a certain brick-and-mortar purveyor of books and magazines. Barnes & Noble yanked the very excellent Linux Format magazine from its U.S. shelves — apparently because of a cover story on the topic of “hacking.”

Facebook starts App Center beta, readies itself for paid web apps

Image

Facebook is no stranger to letting members use real money in web apps, but only for in-app purchases. Its new App Center on the web and in mobile versions will let you buy web apps that have an up-front cost to use rather than shoehorning you into a freemium or subscription model. The portal will even have its own shopping portal, although it’ll mostly be based around — surprise — recommendations coming from your social network profile. The addition should, in theory, lead to premium games and other apps that wouldn’t fit into the Facebook Credit mould. Facebook is taking developer beta sign-ups now, although the apps themselves will have to wait.

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation

google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 — which just recently made the move to the browser’s beta channel — has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second — Web Navigation Extension — is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions — like Traffic Light — to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you’ll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we’re not aware of any examples just yet, however. We’ll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

Samsung snaps up mSpot, teases a boost to media cloud efforts

Image

Talk of a Samsung cloud service might not have panned out at the Galaxy S III event, but that doesn’t mean the Korean electronics giant isn’t interested in the space. Samsung has just acquired mSpot, best known for its cloud music storage and its earlier movie streaming tie-ins with carriers. The exact intentions aren’t exactly clear — Samsung is only promising that mSpot’s technology will represent a “key integrated offering” on new mobile hardware. Still, the deal suggests that the Music Hub and Media Hub may get that much more cloud-savvy in the future. When asked for comment, Dropbox coyly stated: “It’s cool. Being single is the new black.”

DropSpace adds real Dropbox sync to Android

dropspace

Dropbox offers a lovely client for Android, but it’s lacking true “sync” functionality. You can merely browse your Dropbox, pull files into the device, and manually upload specific files.

DropSpace is a little Android app that makes Dropbox on Android work like Dropbox – that is, you get real folder synchronization in the background.

When you run the app you’re prompted for your Dropbox credentials. After logging in to Dropbox, you get to select which device folders you’d like to sync to the cloud. It’s a straightforward mapping process: You select a folder on the device, and then specify where in Dropbox it should go.

The interface is rather clunky, at least for now. The biggest annoyance is that you can’t edit your “sync list”: if you add a folder and then wish to remove it, you must delete the entire list of folders and start over.

In terms of functionality, it works quite well. I tested it with the camera folder, and it was nice to be able to take my photos using the lean default Camera app and have them sync up to the cloud instantly.

Six stages in the production of the HTC One S

The introduction of micro-arc oxidation on the HTC One S has been one of the more interesting (and controversial) moves in the smartphone manufacturing process. As you'll recall, the MAO treatment basically fries the aluminum shell in 1.21 Gigawats of electricity, changing the metal into a near-ceramic and giving the phone a decidedly unique look and feel. MAO's not without its share of criticism, though, with some complaining of chipping. Regardless of the outcome, you've got to admit that the process itself is pretty damn cool.

At HTC's booth at CTIA in Orleans, we're getting another look at that process, with the One S stripped down to its bare metal and shown through a half-dozen manufacturing steps. Sadly, nobody's frying any metal here, but we still get a pretty cool look at the production process of one of the sexiest phones in recent memory. Check it out.

HP intros three Compaq desktops, two displays for the business set

Image

In addition to all the laptops and printers HP announced today, it also has a few goodies for the cube monkeys out there. The company just outed a trio of three business-grade desktops, along with two monitors. First up, there’s the Compaq Elite 8300, which is aimed squarely at large businesses with IT-friendly tools like TPM, Intel’s vPro technology and remote management via LANdesk. The Compaq Pro 4300, meanwhile, targets small businesses with its compact form factor and features like HP’s Chassis Security Kit. The mid-size Compaq Pro 6300 aims to please both groups, with TPM protection, HP’s BIOS solutions and the same 15-month life cycle program offered on the higher-end Elite 8300. Regardless of the model, you’re looking at Ivy Bridge CPUs coupled with Intel’s most up-to-date integrated graphics. Expect the 6300 and 8300 to land on June 4th, priced starting at $579 and $679, respectively. You’ll have to wait a bit longer for the 4300, though: it’ll arrive in Asia on the 22nd, and make its way to the US sometime this fall.

As for those monitors, HP’s introducing one of the nondescript variety, and another with a touchscreen. Starting with the former, the Compaq L2206tm has a 21.5-inch (1920 x 1080) display with a VGA port, two USB 2.0 sockets and DVI output with HDCP support. Meanwhile, the finger-friendly Compaq LA2405x has a 24-inch, 1080p screen, along with VGA, DVI and DisplayPort output — not to mention, a pair of USB 2.0 ports. Either way, they both have a 72 percent color gamut, 250-nit brightness level and viewing angles rated for 170 degrees across and 160 degrees vertical. The multitouch LA2405x is available today for $269, while the L2206tm is coming June 4th for $279. All those details and more in the press release after the break.

Sub-$1500 Kingmax 1TB SSD spotted in Japan

Terabytes. We all want them — especially if they’re served solid-state. But if you’re not quite ready to pony up for OCZ’s Octane SSD 1TB model, you might want to take a trip to Japan. KingMax‘s SMU25 Client Pro 1TB SSD has been spotted for 119,000 yen (roughly $1,490), shaving a good chunk off the price of its OCZ rival, although there is a trade-off. The Kingmax drive doesn’t quite catch up to the Octane performance-wise, with 250MB/s read speeds bested by 460MB/s on the pricier drive and 200 MB/s write speeds trumped by 330MB/s on OCZ’s model. According to Bit-tech, there’s no plans for the drive to leave the Land of the Rising Sun for US just yet, although the Taiwanese manufacturer is already doing business in other parts of Asia so you might just get lucky if you shop around. Its full spec list is housed at source below.

It's not your imagination: Nokia promises fix for purple hue problem seen in some Lumia 900 screens

We didn’t notice any purple screen niggles during our Lumia 900 review. For some users, however, the purple hue issue is real and not so spectacular. If you’re one of those hapless souls seeing purple on your Lumia phone, Nokia recently tweeted that it will release a software fix for the issue — though it declined to provide details on when the update will drop. For the uninitiated, the purple screen problem reportedly occurs when automatic brightness is turned off and the display is set to “low.” The good news for Nokia is that the issue apparently hasn’t prevented folks from gobbling up the Lumia 900. “What if I’m seeing blue instead of purple,” you ask? Uh, you might wanna see a doctor for that, buddy.

New 802.1aq standard promises to improve Ethernet efficiency

Yesterday the IEEE announced an update to the 802.11 WiFi standard, and today it’s promptly moving on to the Ethernet side of things. The association just approved the 802.1aq Shortest Path Bridging standard, which will streamline the management and build-out of networks by using the latest-gen VLAN with a higher service capacity. Basically, a larger scale for more efficiency and less errors. Head past the break for the full presser.

Wall-mounted interactive robot mimics emotions, follows you around, wants to be friends

Not every robot is here to make our food, clean our floors or perform interstellar maintenance for us. Some automatons are there to simply be admired… or in the case of GIA (Gestural Interactive Automaton), to admire us. GIA’s a robotic sculpture created by Daniel Jay Bertner that is essentially a projector, projection sphere and a webcam attached to a trio of servo-controlled articulating arms. A human face is projected on the sphere, which follows around folks who view it and changes its facial expression according to viewer reactions. Why? In order to “emulate and socially engage” them and facilitate a better understanding between man and machine, of course. The magic happens through open source motion tracking and facial recognition software, but you don’t have to take our word for it — see for yourself in the video after the break.
